Vaughan Community Health Centre's Youth Mural Project
The Vaughan Community Health Centre (VCHC) in association with local artist/designer David DiBenedetto, City of Vaughan Recreation Coordinator Mirella Tersigni and Community Health Worker Stacey Salmon unveiled a Youth Mural on January 13th. The project initiative came about as a means of bringing out the innate creativity of the city’s youth, while engaging them in community building activities. “Engaging the youth of this community, who are one of our priority populations, involves their gaining a sense of connection with this facility. This mural is tangible evidence of that connection” says Tony Carella, Chair of the Board of Directors of the VCHC. Various schools around the city were represented, as the 5 meter-long mural was created by many youths between the ages of 10-16. The participants were encouraged to include images of diversity in connection with the community they inhabit to create a mosaic that reflects, “their vision of a healthy community.” There was a sense of accomplishment and pride in the air at the unveiling event - and after viewing the finished product, organizers and the youth participants deserve kudos for creating the unique artefact.
