St. Gabriel the Archangel Elementary School shows Olympic Spirit
The encouragement to lead an active lifestyle is all around us. St. Gabriel the Archangel Elementary School in Woodbridge promoted active living by having their students walk one kilometer on school property twice a week. The school’s goal was to walk "8000 km across Canada," leading students to Vancouver once their walking journey was over. To keep the momentum alive, the school tracked its progress on a map of Canada, allowing students to see where they have travelled.
Samantha “Sami Jo” Small is a three-time Olympic champion who has participated in the winter games several times. She visited the school on January 20th to speak to the students about healthy lifestyles and participating in the olympics and also take the final few steps to Vancouver with the staff and students.
St. Gabriel’s initiative taught students how and why it is important to be active. It also gave the children a goal, something to work toward together, before the winter Olympic games begin.
